How type matchups work

Every move has one type. Against a single-type Pokémon a move is super effective (2×), neutral (1×), not very effective (½×) or has no effect (0×). Against a dual-type Pokémon the two multipliers are multiplied, which is how 4× weaknesses and ¼× resistances happen.

This chart uses the current rules from Generation 6 onward, including the Fairy type.

Frequently asked questions

How many types are there in Pokémon?
There are 18 types: Normal, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ground, Rock, Bug, Ghost, Steel, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, Dark and Fairy.
Which type has the most weaknesses?
Grass and Rock each have 5 weaknesses as a single type.
Which type is super effective against the most types?
Fighting and Ground are each super effective against 5 types.
How do dual-type weaknesses work?
The two multipliers are multiplied. A move that is super effective against both types deals 4× damage, one that both types resist deals ¼×, and an immunity on either type makes the total 0×.
